One practice that grew into six, and kept one record
Harbourline started as a single hospital in Fremantle and now runs six across Perth. The thing that holds it together is a shared record, which is why a consult at Rockingham on Monday is on the screen at Joondalup on Tuesday.
The Fremantle hospital opened first and stayed open. Overnight cover was the reason for it: at the time there was one after-hours option south of the river, and it was a long drive from most of the suburbs the practice served. Staffing a vet and two nurses through the night was the decision everything since has been built around.
The other five hospitals came from the same argument in reverse. If one building can hold the night, the rest can be near where people live, and the work that needs a scanner or a theatre travels to the buildings that have them. That is the whole model, and it is why the services page carries a table of which hospital does what.
The record follows the pet rather than the building. Everything else we do is downstream of that.
How we work
The estimate comes first
Anything past a consult is quoted in writing before it happens, and where a finding on the day changes the figure we telephone before continuing.
One record, six hospitals
Notes, images and laboratory results are shared. A vet you have never met still has the full history in front of them.
The night shift is staffed, not on call
Fremantle has people in the building through the night rather than a phone diverted to a home number.
Say when cost is the problem
There is very often a staged plan that reaches the same place more slowly, and we would rather build one than have you decline the whole thing.
