The vaccination schedule for a Perth dog or cat
Which vaccines a pet needs depends on where it lives, how old it is and what it does with its day. Boarding kennels and puppy schools set their own requirements, and we write the certificate they ask for.
3core vaccines for a Perth dog

What happens
The puppy course
Three visits at six to eight weeks, ten to twelve weeks and fourteen to sixteen weeks. Full cover starts one week after the last one, which is the date puppy school and the dog beach both want to see.

Adult boosters
C3 every three years and kennel cough yearly for dogs that board, train or go to daycare. We send the reminder to your phone a fortnight out.

The cat schedule
F3 covers the three diseases every cat needs cover for. Cats that go outdoors or live in a multi-cat household get feline leukaemia added after a blood test.

Titre testing
A blood test that measures existing immunity, for owners who would rather boost on evidence than on the calendar. Results take three working days and the certificate carries the figures.

What each vaccine covers, and who needs it
Core vaccines are for every animal. The rest depend on where your pet goes. This is the table our vets work from.
| Vaccine | Covers | Who needs it | Interval |
|---|---|---|---|
| C3 (dog, core) | Distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus | Every dog | 3 years after the puppy course |
| Kennel cough (dog) | Bordetella and parainfluenza | Boarding, daycare, training, dog parks | Yearly |
| Leptospirosis (dog) | Leptospira | Dogs near rats, water or farms | Yearly |
| F3 (cat, core) | Herpesvirus, calicivirus, panleukopenia | Every cat | 3 years after the kitten course |
| FeLV (cat) | Feline leukaemia virus | Outdoor and multi-cat households | Yearly, after a negative test |
| Rabbit calicivirus | RHDV1 and the K5 strain | Every rabbit, indoor ones included | Every 6 to 12 months |
Rabies is absent from Australia and pets here are vaccinated for it only when they are being exported. Ask us early if you are moving overseas: the timing runs to months rather than weeks.
Where you can get this
6 of our six hospitals, because the equipment and the people it needs live in those buildings.
What it costs
From $95visit
The puppy course is priced as one course of three rather than as three visits.
All consult feesQuestions we get asked
My dog is a year overdue. Do we start again?
Usually one booster restarts the clock. More than two years overdue and we will often do two, three weeks apart, to be certain.
Can my puppy meet other dogs before the course finishes?
Known, vaccinated adult dogs in a private yard are reasonable from the second injection. Dog beaches and parks wait until a week after the third.
Does my indoor cat need anything?
F3, yes. Cat flu travels on hands and clothing, and panleukopenia survives a long time in the environment. FeLV is the one an indoor cat can usually skip.
Is there a reaction to watch for?
A quiet evening and a sore spot are normal. Facial swelling, vomiting or hives in the first few hours is a reason to call us, and Fremantle answers overnight.
What does a boarding kennel want to see?
A current C3 and a kennel cough given at least ten days before the stay. We print the certificate with both dates on it.
How much notice do you need?
Vaccination appointments are usually available within two days at Midland and Rockingham, and inside a week everywhere else.
