What it is like to work here, including the parts that are hard
Six hospitals, one roster and a shared record. This page says what the work actually involves rather than describing a culture, because everybody describes a culture and it tells you nothing.
The roster is built eight weeks ahead and published in full, so you can see your shifts before you accept them. Night shifts at Fremantle are worked in blocks with the days either side clear. Nobody is rostered to a hospital they have never worked in without a shift alongside somebody who has.
The parts people find hard
Fremantle nights are busy and they are the shifts where the outcome is worst most often. Emergency work concentrates the cases that arrive too late, and that is a real cost that the roster and the debrief structure can lighten but cannot remove.
The second one is money conversations. A vet in general practice has several a day, and they are the part new graduates report as the hardest. We train it explicitly, and the written estimate exists partly so that the conversation happens once with a number on the table.
You will do a money conversation before lunch every day you work. The training for it is on the roster, not left to you to work out.

In full, including the night blocks. Swaps go through the manager rather than between individuals so nobody carries a favour.
A mentor for every new graduate
Named, rostered on the same shifts for the first three months, and with time allocated for it rather than expected on top of a full list.
Continuing education, funded and rostered
A budget and the days off to use it. Study leave is booked into the roster rather than taken from annual leave.
A path into an interest area
Dentistry at Canning Vale, imaging at Joondalup, rehabilitation at Subiaco, exotics at Joondalup and Midland. Every one of those started as somebody's interest.
